History
Mutual Housing is a European concept, brought to Hartford by Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation, a congressionally chartered non-profit organization. During the late 1980's, a consortium of Hartford area government officials, corporate leaders, community advocates and potential resident visited a mutual housing demonstration project in Baltimore, and petitioned Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation to sponsor a similar program in Hartford. At the time, many families were being displaced by conversions of apartments to condominiums.
Incorporated in 1988, MHAGH received prominence with the establishment of the first Mutual Housing development in Connecticut. Located at 222-248 Park Terrace in Hartford's Frog Hollow neighborhood, the development is comprised of 42 one and two bedroom apartments in seven contiguous buildings. The renovation of these homes was completed in 1991.
Mutual Housing now owns 8 completed properties and is developing another site for a total of 334 apartments.
