In an era of economic uncertainty, many families are searching for the stability of home ownership at a price they can afford. For many, the dream of home ownership has been elusive. People are in need of a secure home, one they can afford, and one in which they can feel a sense of community and neighborhood. Mutual Housing provides families with an affordable alternative to traditional home ownership and a significant step up from rental housing.
Mutual Housing is owned by a Mutual Housing Association and residents are members of the Association that owns the housing. The Association is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of residents, and representatives from the private, public and community sectors. Mutual Housing residents and resident interests constitute a majority of the Board of Directors.
The Mutual Housing Association as a whole owns all of the housing developments. Although residents cannot buy or sell their units directly, they do have a pride of ownership that is usually associated with home ownership. Residents have a significant voice in decision-making, and have a lifetime right to live in the housing.
